In 2015, Eric Satz (founder) asked himself a simple question, "can I make an investment using my IRA money?" The answer was yes, but the process was anything but easy. He encountered countless roadblocks: compliance risk, daunting amounts of paperwork, and six weeks to facilitate the investment, and excessive fees.

Knowing there was a better way to make these investments and an opportunity to empower people with a level of control that had been lacking, Alto was born. In the fall of 2018, Alto launched online, allowing all Americans to participate in alternative investments with their IRA accounts.
